Food Review: Bunsik, Charing Cross Road

*Disclaimer – I ain’t no food critic, just a foodie giving her personal opinions*

If you’re on London foodie Tiktok, then I’m sure you and Bunsik will have crossed paths at some point. The videos of their cheese pulls will make your mouth water.

Korean food is increasingly becoming more and more popular in London, and Bunsik is one you definitely need to get yourself down to if you can. It has opened opposite the Oseyo supermarket, which is also worth checking out!

The Food

Rating: 4 out of 5.

What we tried from their menu:

  • Potato Hotdog – £5.50
  • Potato Mozzarella – £5.90

Korean food is increasingly becoming more and more popular in London, and this one has opened opposite the Oseyo supermarket. So if you’re thinking about giving Korean street food a go, then definitely head over to Bunsik. For anyone who doesn’t know, a corndog is a hot dog wrapped in corn meal dough and then deep fried.

They have seven different corndogs to choose from: original hotdog, half and half, octo legs hotdog, potato hotdog, potato mozzarella, cheese and cheese, and beef hotdog. They also have ddukbokki (fried rice cakes), with different toppings to choose from, and bulgogi, spicy pork and chicken teriyaki cupbaps (rice pots).

Both of the options I tried were tasty, but didn’t blow me away. Maybe it’s because it had been hyped up too much. This isn’t to say that they weren’t good though, I just felt like most of the flavour came from the sauces they added on top. Without the sauce, I think it could have ended up being a bit bland.

Value For Money

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Although the food was really quite nice, it’s pricey for a small snack. I wouldn’t say you get much bang for your buck. I’d be lying if I said me and my flatmate didn’t end up going to get more food from elsewhere because we were still hungry.

Service

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The service was friendly, quick and it was very simple to order. Don’t expect to be able to sit down though – there’s very limited seating as the shop is tiny. We had to walk to Leicester Square and find somewhere to sit down there to eat it. And you will need to sit down if you get any sauces on top as it can be messy.

We walked straight in and I don’t recall waiting very long for my food at all. I have since realised I got extremely lucky that day. Every time I’ve walked past it since, there’s been a queue out the door doubling back on itself. Now that I’ve already tried it, I just don’t know if I’d be willing to wait for it.

Overall

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Honestly, I enjoyed the food and would highly recommend going if you’re looking for something unique to try. But what let it down for me was the price. I’d be more likely to go back if they weren’t so small. But I suppose London is notorious for having expensive novelty street food. If you can catch it on a good day when there’s no queue, then I would say go for it. Otherwise, it’s okay to skip it.

Dietary Requirements

They state on their Instagram that the chicken teriyaki cupbap is halal. I am unsure if their beef hotdogs are also halal or not but it may be worth asking.

If you are vegetarian, their cheese options are for you!

There are no vegan options that I’m aware of.
