Turn Your Blue Monday Into ‘Brew Monday’

Let’s swap Blue Monday for ‘Brew Monday’! Last week, Samaritans kicked off their Brew Monday campaign with the goal of turning the negative outlook of a Blue Monday upside down. Statistically, the third Monday of January is known as the most depressing day of the year. In the current climate we need a ‘Brew Monday’ more than ever.

A Brew For Two (Or More)

Grab your favourite type of tea, whether that’s herbal, peppermint or a classic builder’s brew, and get in touch with someone. If you’re not a fan of tea then you can still take part with a coffee or hot chocolate.

The UK is now in its third lockdown, and the past year has been lonely for many of us. It’s so important that we don’t become accustomed to a solitary lifestyle. Feeling alone can have a huge impact on your mental health, so make sure reaching out to others is on your weekly agenda. It can really brighten up your day, and someone else’s.

How To Connect Virtually

We all need to be having a ‘Brew Monday’ to stay connected with other people. You don’t even have to do it on a Monday, it can be any day that works for you! The main message of ‘Brew Monday’ is to check in on people and catch up with them. Here’s some ways you can connect:

  • Group audio/video calling is available on Zoom, Skype, Facebook Messenger, Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp (up to 4 people), and Google Hangout.
  • Not everyone has access to a camera, or wants to go on camera. In this case a good old phone call works just as well.

Sharing a cuppa with friends and family right now is more than just sharing a drink – it’s about reaching out. You can even spice up your call a bit with a quiz or virtual escape rooms. If you can’t for whatever reason have do a call, then try reaching out to people in other ways. Even something as small as sending a text or tagging them in a post online can make a difference.

Donate To The Samaritans

If you’ve got any money to spare, please consider donating to Samaritans. For people who are struggling to cope right now, Samaritans provide a service where they will listen to you with no judgement. Just £5 can cover the cost of a call which could help someone in more ways than you know.

Have you done anything creative when reaching out to friends? Let me know in the comments!

    1. Same, I found out about after their campaign had been launched and thought it was a great idea to remember to check in with people, for yourself and for them, on any day of the week 🙂
